Request for western scientific bodies to stop all collaboration with Russian scientific institutions

JOINT LETTER FROM Ukrainian Scientists

The Russian army is not only attacking military infrastructure, it is destroying Ukrainian cities! They are deliberately targeting civilians and refugees. Entire families, including children, have been wiped out by the Russians while evacuating from their homes.

Against this backdrop of war, the world’s main scientific platforms, including the Web of Science (Clarivate Analytics), Scopus (Elsevier), PubMed and ResearchGate are still collaborating with Russian scientific institutions. Furthermore, Russian scientific journals continue to be indexed on both platforms, with the Russian Science Citation Indexing database, for example, being included in the Web of Science.

Ukrainian scientists have a long history of collaboration with our Russian colleagues, and when this war started, many of us contacted our Russian colleagues, as the intellectual elite of the Russian nation, with a request to protest the war with Ukraine. However, the majority wrote back that “we are all stupid” and “do not understand the real political situation”. They told us that “the Russian forces are saving us from Nazis” and that “we should stop resisting and wait for Russia to build ‘peace’ in our land” so we can “live in friendship with Russia”. “If we do not understand this and still support the Ukrainian forces, we will answer for the blood of all Russians killed in this war and for the civilians killed in Donbass... or we will be killed”.

Science is a field for peace, for the advancement of knowledge and for collaboration between peoples of all nations. There is no place for people who support the massacre of civilians. While very few Russian scientists felt able to support Ukraine and its struggle against this war, their scientific results have nevertheless been financed by the Russian dictatorship. To us, this is the same as supporting this bloody war and the criminal regime of Russia.

As such, on behalf of the Ukrainian scientific community, we strongly request that the Web of Science, Scopus, PubMed, ResearchGate and other western scientific bodies and publishers, halt all collaboration with Russian scientific institutions and cease indexation of Russian journals, such that the Russian Scientific community may be isolated from the civilized World.
